One of the most simple and delicious extras you can make this Christmas is my Five- minute Cranberry and Orange Sauce.

Really, I should say my Dad’s Cranberry and Orange Sauce as it’s a tradition for him to make this to go with our Christmas dinner. I love lashings of this fruity jelly served next to roast potatoes; it’s Christmas in a sauce.

This is a super easy one step recipe that takes five minutes and is heads above a shop-bought counterpart! It lasts well for a few days in the fridge if you wish to make in advance and is a great gift for friends in a little jar. Preferably tied with a ribbon to mark the occasion.

Be sure to use an unwaxed orange, as artificially shiny oranges are waxed with an animal ingredient which is therefore not suitable for vegans, or anyone else who doesn’t want odd ingredients in their sauce. You can find unwaxed oranges at all the leading supermarkets; my last bag full was from Sainsbury’s.

Makes 1 small bowlful

Ingredients

250g cranberries, fresh or frozen

Juice and zest of 1 unwaxed orange

3 tbsp granulated sugar

Method

  1. Add the cranberries, orange juice and zest and sugar to a pan. Cook over a medium-high heat for 5 minutes, stirring frequently. Break down the cranberries with a fork during cooking. The sauce will thicken as it cools. Serve in a bowl or spoon into individual jars.
